Environmental solidarity trip to Nusa Penida

Collaborate with the centre that managed to turn this small island in the Bali archipelago into a bird sanctuary.

Environmental solidarity trip to Nusa Penida

from 430€ por persona

Work to protect wildlife and their habitat on this beautiful island of Bali.

Throughout Indonesia, endemic birds are threatened with extinction due to poaching and the wildlife trade. The center is responsible for the breeding and release of critically endangered birds. It is also in charge of habitat protection, reforestation and agroforestry (agriculture integrated with the cultivation and conservation of trees).

On the other hand, we work with environmental education for the local population. Teaching sustainable ways of earning a living such as ecotourism and organic farming to reduce reliance on logging and illegal palm oil plantations which are the main drivers of deforestation. We also give free English classes and have a library for community use.

On this solidarity trip you will work monitoring endemic birds of this island, giving English classes and doing reforestation work. It is a learning experience suitable for all kinds of people, groups or families from 7 years old.

This project works towards achieving the following Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation
SDG 12 Responsible production and consumption
SDG 13 Climate action
SDG 14 Underwater Life
SDG 15 Life of terrestrial ecosystems

A day in the project
"Every morning we would go to observe different pairs of birds all over the island to monitor their behavior, if the family was growing, if they had moved.... This lasted about an hour and a half and then we were free until about 3:00 p.m. to do whatever we wanted: go to the beach, for coffee, to the market, and so on. In the afternoon, there was activity again, this time related to the community: English classes, beach cleaning, activities in the vegetable garden, etc. At the end of the day, we went back to the center to shower and have dinner together; then, who still had strength, went down to the "village" to have a drink while listening to live music.

José Bermúdez, volunteer in August 2018.

Project Location

Project

The solidarity trip takes place in a small island of Bali called Nusa Penida. It is a small and beautiful island where you can find the best bird sanctuary in the whole country. The center where you will collaborate is in a jungle environment but very close to the coast (in 10-15 minutes walk you reach the beach area).
This organization has been working in Indonesia since 1997 to protect wildlife, their habitat and support local communities. In Nusa Penida they have been working since 2004 and in these years they have managed to turn the island into a bird sanctuary and have the island declared a Marine Protected Area. They also work on an ad hoc basis with monitoring and protection patrols on the east coast for endangered sea turtles.

Climate

Bali has tropical climate all the year round. The annual average temperature is 30 C. The dry season goes from April to September and the rainy season goes from October to March but it can rain at any time of the year, although the rain lasts little. In general, the best months to visit Bali are from May to August. During these months the climate is less hot and it rains less.
