Cooperation in Nepal

We have been managing our first International Cooperation project in Nepal since 2019. This is our story.

Travel from Komang to Kathmandu

2013

In 2013 we had our first contact with the village of Komang. The village is located in the Upper Dolpo region, right in the Himalayan range at an altitude of over 4,500 meters. Access to any specialised service, such as a health centre, is a journey of days in very difficult conditions. In winter the routes are snow-covered and impossible to traverse.

We learn about a small initiative that organises a lodging and study center in Kathmandu to enable some of the young people from the village, who only have access to primary education, can spend the school year in the capital and continue their secondary education.

2015

Different projects begin to be developed in the village of Komang related to the improvement of communications, supply and care for different groups:

  • Project for textile handicraft where 13 weaving machines are bought to make blankets, Tibetan belts, bags, etc.
  • Purchase of 48 female ewes and 2 male ewes. The money from the sale of the handicraft products is used to pay the salary of a young woman who looks after the sheep.
  • Installation of wooden floor in two classrooms Komang Primary School.

2016, 2017 & 2018

  • Conditioning of a day care centre for the elderly in Komang whose relatives work in the fields and are unable to care for them.
  • Construction of a greenhouse to grow vegetables for the senior citizens' centre and the retirement centre.
  • Restoration of the gompa (Tibetan temple) and monastery.
  • Construction of a meditation retreat centre with three rooms.
  • Creation of infrastructure to bring water to every house in the village
  • Creation of the first delivery company: Seven mules transport goods between the various villages in the Upper Dolpo region. The mules are also rented out and the profits are used to cover the basic needs of the elderly in the day centre.

2019 & 2020

The Dolpo project becomes part of Tumaini, donors are transferred and the team is expanded. The coordinators Arantza Casas and Antón Barros take over its management in the field.

The secondary school and youth accommodation centre in Kathmandu continues to grow. Every year, four more students join a new course. Some young people are starting university studies.

The centre currently receives volunteers from Tumaini to reinforce the content of its classes, for example in English, and to attend to the students.

2021 y 2022

It is finished wooden floor in all classrooms at Komang primary school. This helps to protect the students from the cold.

A new clinic with the minimum services to care for injured and sick people before going down to Kathmandu. The idea is that students from Kathmandu who are beginning their university studies in health care will be able to take over the clinic in the future.

International Cooperation Nepal

Future projects, can you help us?

1

Providing the people with solar panels The high altitude of the mountains means that a minimum of light and hot water can be provided to each house, as animal droppings are often scarce and are the main fuel used (there are no trees or bushes due to the altitude).

2

Once the clinic is completed (it is currently being funded by the Government of Nepal), we will launch a fundraising campaign for fitting out the clinic The project will be open to people with a health profile to collaborate in the future.

Can you help us to get these projects off the ground?
