Saray, Anna, Lidia and Paula, volunteers in Kenya: "A solidarity trip between friends unites a lot"

“We are four friends. We are 20 years old and we live in Barberà del Vallès. Every day we face inequalities just for being women, so this year we decided to collaborate with a project that helps women or girls in a southern country. when we met the shelter for girls with which Tumaini collaborates, we knew we had to go there to do our bit. The idea belonged to all of us and we thought that it would be much better if we lived the experience together”. Thus began the solidarity trip of Saray, Anna, Lidia and Paula to Kenya. This is his story.

How are the girls in the project? What stories do they have?

The girls from the project have given us life. Despite all the misfortunes they have had to experience, they are in an NGO with good facilities and are very well cared for. Are able to bring out their best smiles and transmit all the good that they have inside!

Their stories are very diverse but they all have one thing in common: they have been victims of very harsh and unfair situations, especially derived from abuse, rape or very broken families. However, they do not stop dreaming and imagining the life they will have in the future. many of them want to go to college, have a job, and live happily. For us they are a great example to follow! We have not had any difficulty in dealing with them since many were similar in age to us and we hit it off perfectly. RAFIKI WA AFRIKA, FRIENDS IN SPAIN.

When we arrived we thought it would be more difficult to establish a bond with them, but fortunately it was very fast. And what makes us most happy today, after having returned, is that we continue to have contact with them.

How about taking a solidarity trip with four friends?

Living an experience like this unites a lot. You have to always be at 100%, so that, if one has a moment of downturn, that the rest pull the others. You realize that friendships are forged through unforgettable experiences and that's how it has been for us.

What activities did you do?

In addition to talking for hours with the girls of our culture, theirs, our lives, etc. We did different activities like: Spanish language workshop, talent night, bingo night, fashion show night… Our intention was that during the summer days the girls could enjoy themselves, interact with each other and learn new habits.

What lessons do you bring after your solidarity trip?

You could say that they are infinite! We have thoroughly known the Kenyan culture because we have lived with them during all the days that we stayed there. On the other hand, if you take a trip on your own, you can only get a little idea of the culture of that place from what you see.

If you had to keep something from your solidarity trip, what would it be?

With all the smiles and expressions of affection that we have received since day one. With how happy we have been in the project, they made us feel as if we had been through a very long season and we barely made it to a month. Their smiles, their laughs, their laughter, their bravery, their strength and his hugs that stopped the world at that moment.

Can you think of any information that may be useful for people who are thinking of collaborating?

The project always needs volunteers, any kind of help is good and welcome. The information that we would have liked to hear before is that it will change your life, that you will get to enter their lives and become part of them.

Saray, Paula, Lidia and Anna collaborated through Tumaini with the shelter for girls in kenya from August 5 to 20, 2019.
