Solidarity trip with homeless children on the coast of Kenya

from 600€ por persona

Help and support boys and girls who live or have lived on the streets of the city of Mombasa.

This NGO welcomes, rehabilitates and trains boys and girls who live on the streets in the Mombasa area, on the Kenyan coast. Founded in 1993, the project covers the needs of girls and boys living on the streets, orphans and vulnerable minors who work in marginal neighborhoods. The majority of this children live on the street, they suffer from domestic violence in their homes, drug and alcohol abuse in their families, the death of their father or mother, etc. The center is in charge of rescuing the minors, giving them a safe place to live and care for them, when possible, they look for their relatives and reunite them, they also provide educational support, training in different areas, and supporting them with need medical care, psychosocial support or HIV prevention services.

The NGO was founded by a local woman, Mama Lucy. Mama Lucy has been fighting for more than 20 years to offer a better life to the little ones on the street. She began by welcoming only street girls, as they are the most vulnerable group, but since 2017 she also has an area for boys . Today, more than 80 girls and about 20 boys between the ages of 3 and 16 receive their support. They work with the government who informs them about new abandoned boys and girls living alone on the streets.

A day in the project

“At nine in the morning we arrived at the center. They always received us with their best smile and that made me happy to continue with strength for the rest of the day. We immediately got to work. Most days we helped Barbra in her class, since it was full of children of different ages and teaching everyone at the same time was somewhat complicated. I was enthusiastic about their way of learning, through dances and songs, and many times in the same courtyard in the center. At mid-morning we served them breakfast that was always boiling, and we helped them cool it by passing it from one cup to another. Then we continued with the classes. Mealtime was the time when we had time to talk to the elders. We took advantage of those moments to learn more about their lives and their past. I listened carefully and my feelings were always a mixture of happiness and sadness. They are great survivors in this hard life, without a doubt! In the afternoon they usually left more free time to play and we enjoyed these little moments with them.”
