Solidarity trip with children with disabilities

Work with children with physical or mental disabilities in Cochabamba, a quiet and beautiful city in the centre of Bolivia.

Solidarity trip with children with disabilities

from 480€ por persona
Open all year round (except Christmas: from 20 December to 10 January).

The centre treats more than 250 children with physical or mental disabilities. The volunteer work is usually in the mornings. All the pupils who study at the centre are children who have suffered serious problems both in their academic and social development in the regular schools of the city. They are cared for in small groups by their teachers. If the child requires therapeutic attention from a specialist, the centre provides it as part of the comprehensive care. They are supported in their learning by the Psychology, Speech Therapy and Psychopedagogy divisions.

The afternoon project offers a comprehensive therapy to promote the rehabilitation of children and adolescents at a neuromuscular, psychological, cognitive and social level, using the horse as a therapeutic tool. All the children are at risk of social exclusion and some are abandoned by their families. Two main techniques are used: Hippotherapy and therapeutic riding.

The centre currently care for 10 children but could attend to many more. They have a waiting list of more than 60 children who could be incorporated into the program with the help of volunteers.

This project works towards achieving the following Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 1 End poverty
SDG 2 Zero Hunger
SDG 3 Health and well-being
SDG 4 Quality education
SDG 5 Gender equality
SDG 10 Reducing inequalities

A day in the project
"As I worked on both projects at the same time, I went to both centres every day. In the morning I went to the integral education centre. There were physiotherapy students doing their internships there, so I helped in the therapies with the children and in the training of the future physiotherapists through small workshops, in which their university internship teacher and the centre's speech therapist also participated. We also organised a talk for the families together with the teachers of the centre, where they were able to express their doubts and concerns about how to help their children. Normally the timetable was from 9 am to 12.30 pm.In the afternoons, she went to the equine therapy centre from 16.00 to 18.00. As I was far away, I went directly from the holistic therapy centre and could have lunch there with Jaqueline, the project director, and her family. There I was in charge of carrying out therapies in the physiotherapy room and answering the families' questions, as well as helping in the equine therapy sessions. I also collaborated with the centre's professionals and other volunteers by contributing ideas for the creation of pictograms and communication boards".
