What are the differences between group travel + responsible tourism and Tumaini solidarity travel?

What are the differences between group travel + responsible tourism and Tumaini solidarity travel?

This is one of the questions we have been asked the most since we started organising our first group trip, specifically to Cape Verde at Easter in 2021. Well, if you are interested in solving the big question, you have to keep reading to find out which of the two types of solidarity trip best suits your profile, needs and interests. Here we go!

Let's start at the beginning...

What is a solidarity trip?

A trip in which volunteers contribute to the continuation of small local projects. During their stay, they dedicate a few hours a day to collaborate in tasks such as: school support classes, art workshops, animal care, organic farming, etc.

Another question we are often asked is whether this experience is for everyone, of course it is! Anyone, whatever their profile, age or experience, can make a contribution. In Tumaini we collaborate with projects focused on different themes: environment, children's education, adult education, health and animal rescue. Moreover, in most cases, the volunteers stay in the same project, so they also contribute to its self-sufficiency.

What kind of solidarity trips do we offer at Tumaini?

Helping rescued wild animals return to live as naturally as possible in the Bolivian jungle, running workshops with children at risk of exclusion in Cape Verde, supporting secondary school students in Kathmandu... Not all volunteer work is the same. These are just some of the solidarity trips. You can see all the options here.

Most people agree that it is the volunteers themselves who gain the most from this kind of experience. In the nine years of Tumaini's existence, the organisation has seen many examples of this phenomenon. At the end of their trips, the volunteers often tell us how much they have learned, how they have become aware of issues they did not even know about before. They come back with valuable experiences and many lessons learned.

So, what in a solidarity group trip + responsible tourism?

A way to get to know the charms of a country that you have been wanting to visit for a long time while you get to know and collaborate in Tumaini projects. This combination can be done alone to connect with the other people in the group and with whom you share concerns and solidarity, although you can always encourage a friend or family member to join the adventure.

For the time being, we have organised this type of group trips that combine responsible tourism with support in our projects in Cape Verde and Kenya. Two opportunities to discover the charms of Africa and connect with its realities. The journey that allows you to live an authentic cultural immersion, to connect with the culture and its traditions from the inside.

In the itineraries we have designed, we dedicate several days to visit and support several of our projects and we combine this with sustainable tourism in unique areas far from the more traditional and overcrowded routes.
