The Sustainable Development Goals: What they are and why they matter to us

What are the Sustainable Development Goals and why do we think they are important?

As many of you already know, Tumaini's main objective is to bring society closer to different realities and to raise awareness of social and environmental issues.

Through solidarity travel and volunteering in different international projects, we offer the opportunity to live transforming experiences to people who are restless and sensitised to certain issues such as the education, children, inequality or animals in danger.

We also support projects with which we collaborate with donations, through our partnersWe also run crowdfunding campaigns, participate in competitions and organise events.

In addition, all the projects with which we collaborate work towards the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as ODS. But...

What are the SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals are 17 solidarity wishes to work for, adopted at the global level, to build a better world. They include priorities such as the end of hunger, climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption and access to justice..

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but not only stated as wishes. With them, he also elaborated concrete goals and ways to achieve them. All of this was called Agenda 2030.

These are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals:

Why did the SDGs come about?

The SDGs have become a roadmap and a challenge for the whole of societyare a universal call for action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The work is carried out in each country by governments, businesses, NGOs and the general public through organisations such as Tumaini.

The United Nations (UN) is the largest international organisation in existence. It was created to maintain international peace and security, foster friendly relations between nations and achieve international cooperation to solve global problems. It is therefore responsible for creating such goals and roadmaps.

Tumaini and the Sustainable Development Goals

For all these reasons, in Tumaini we have considered that, from our small boat, we want to row in the same direction as the rest of the global organisations.

All our projects, from their approaches educational, environmental or animal protectionare working on one of the Sustainable Development Goals. We believe it is important to add our work for a better world to this agenda.

These are the SDGs that each project works on:

EDUCATION

In the field of education, we support 15 local NGOs working on the following SDGs:

SDG 1: The end of poverty. To achieve this Goal, economic growth must be inclusive in order to create sustainable jobs and promote equality.

SDG 2: Zero hunger. The food and agriculture sector offers key solutions for development and is vital for the elimination of hunger and poverty. It is important to reduce food waste and support local farmers.

SDG 3: Health and well-being. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting universal well-being is fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

SDG 4: Quality education. Education is the basis for improving our lives and sustainable development. Many of our projects have a limited educational service, our volunteers support the teachers in order to make the training more complete.

SDG 5: Gender equality. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but the necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Empowering women and girls, along with upholding their rights, is one of our priorities.

SDG 10: Reducing inequalities. Reducing inequality within and between countries. Many of the people who are part of our projects are at risk of exclusion or marginalised.

ENVIRONMENT

In this area we have 2 local NGOs working on environmental protection, organic agriculture and environmental education. The SDGs they work on are:

SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation. Water free of impurities and accessible to all is an essential part of the world we want to live in. Don't waste water, lack of water affects more than 40% of the population.

SDG 12: Responsible production and consumption. The goal of sustainable consumption and production is to make more and better things with fewer resources. Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminium - the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today.

SDG 13: Climate action. Climate change is a global challenge that does not respect national borders. We can all contribute to curb global warming. At Tumaini, we measure the carbon footprint of solidarity travel and reverse the impact on projects or communities in need.

SDG 14: Underwater Life. Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Don't use plastic bags, we must keep the oceans clean, over 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity to survive.

SDG 15: Life of terrestrial ecosystems. Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

ANIMALS

And finally, we work with 3 local NGOs that protect, rescue and raise awareness of animals. Both projects have several centres.

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth. We must reflect on this slow and uneven progress and review our economic and social policies aimed at eradicating poverty.

SDG 12: Responsible production and consumption. The goal of sustainable consumption and production is to make more and better things with fewer resources. Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminium - the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today.

SDG 15: Life of terrestrial ecosystems. Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
