It's time to take stock of the year and at Tumaini we can't help but let a smile escape us. And it is that 2017 for us has been a year of changes, and most of them, positive. Increase the number of travelers. Recently launched solidarity trips in Nepal, Mexico and Kenya have received dozens of volunteers. And also, more than 8,000 euros have been raised to improve some projects thanks, in part, to our collaboration. In short: more desire to collaborate, more solidarity... and more life-changing trips!

The Tumaini family grows

In 2016 there was a significant increase in the number of people who choose Tumaini to carry out their solidarity trips. In 2017 this upward trend has been maintained: we have passed from 197 to 262 travelers. We carry four years connecting volunteers with NGOs in countries of the South, and more than 600 people in total They have already lived enriching, unforgettable and supportive experiences through Tumaini. Thank you all for making it possible!

And how are the people who have traveled in 2017 with us? The vast majority are women (76%), between 25 and 31 years old (30%). They are followed closely by people between the ages of 18 and 24 (26%), between 32 and 38 (18%) and between 39 and 45 years (14%). As you can see, the new generations want to travel in a more sustainable, supportive and alternative way.

Besides, the average rating of his experience has risen to 9.03, compared to 7.7 last year. There is no better news than knowing that people return from their trips full of learning and valuable experiences.

Peru and Kenya, the most requested destinations

And with a big difference. The 29% of the people who have made a solidarity trip with Tumaini in 2017 have collaborated in Peru. Because? Because the project has two very different locations: one in the center of the city of Cusco, for lovers of cultural life; and another in full sacred Valley, for those who prefer nature. Because the little school uses an innovative methodology, based on art and emotional education, to work on issues that affect boys and girls (such as gender violence, discrimination, etc.) And, of course, because it is very close to Machu Picchu, the dream for many travelers.
Kenya It is the second most requested destination (26%). In that country we collaborate with two projects: a orphanage and school in the capital, Nairobi, and a girls rescue center in Ngong Hills.
They follow him: India (12%), Nepal (10%) and Indonesia (8,7).

Educational projects, favorites

The 85% of the people who have traveled this year with Tumaini have chosen educational projects. In them, the volunteers have given both training for boys and girls (school reinforcement, recreational or artistic activities, health or first aid workshops, etc.), and for adults (computer classes, language classes, etc.).
The 10% has chosen to support NGOs that work with animals, doing activities such as: preparing meals, taking walks with them, cleaning the cages, helping the keepers to bathe them, etc. Finally, the 6% has collaborated in environmental projects, in tasks such as: cleaning beaches and mountains, setting up ecological orchards, monitoring released animals, etc.

More than 8,000 euros raised

In 2017, we have organized various fundraising campaigns for Tumaini's partner NGOs that had more urgent needs. Specifically, we have achieved:
  • €2,198 for the Indian NGO helping Tibetan refugees. They were raised thanks to two charity events organized by Tumaini: Bollywood Summer in June and Solidarity Yoga in December, together with the volunteer contributions. Two of them raised funds among their friends and family and also donated their wedding gifts for the project. With this amount, a mobile children's bookstore and it will create a playroom for the babies of the solidarity nursery.
  • 657 euros for him kenya orphanage and school. We launched an urgent fundraising campaign among volunteers to cover the medical expenses of one of the girls from the NGO. In addition, medicines were bought for the rest of the boys and girls.
In addition, the volunteers who have traveled with Tumaini have organized, with our support, various actions in favor of educational center for girls in nairobi, kenya: a solidarity dinner in Zarautz (435 euros collected for the nursery expenses of several girls), a Christmas market (1385 euros) and a recruitment campaign organized by a group of volunteers (2000 euros to improve the kitchen of the project). A volunteer has also donated 600 euro to pay for the secondary education of one of the older girls in the project. The commitment of many of the people who travel with Tumaini surprises us and excites us. THANK YOU.

Year of Sustainable Tourism

2017 has also been the International Year of Sustainable Tourism and at Tumaini we join the celebration with two talks on how to travel more responsibly: in the Madrid Social and Solidarity Economy Fair and in Bioculture. We have also published several posts on the subject, we have participated in several events organized for this international year and we have raised awareness about the impacts of our trips in numerous appearances in the media.
And finally... we have joined the Social Market of Madrid! We are already part of this network of more than 150 companies and organizations to promote a more social and supportive economy.
Because another way of traveling is possible, and easier if so many committed people accompany us. Are we still counting on you in 2018?
